Golf: A Game For All Ages
Golf is one of the most difficult sports to master, yet it is a game for all ages. Just ask anyone who plays it for fun or profit, or both! In recent times there has been an explosion of interest in golf. It is no longer "a game for old men"- or seemingly out of shape younger men.
Younger people are more and more interested in the sport, probably due in large part to the success of Tiger Woods and the younger contemporaries who followed in their wake. Based on golf's handicap system a young amateur would even be able to win a few holes over Tiger Woods, well maybe one or two, once Woods concedes a chunk of strokes to make it a level playing field.
Golf is no longer seen merely as a game where white guys dress up like black pimps (to allude to a Robin Williams quote on the origin of golf). Those out of shape guys were never really out of shape, either. It takes quite a lot to smack that little white ball for hundreds of yards and chase it around all day, even if running is not required.
Golf is a very social game, and as this has been realized by more and more people the urge to play the game has grown proportionately. Sure, you can go to the course by yourself and hit the balls down the fairway by yourself and put them into the holes by yourself, but that's not what people usually do. The reason golf makes such a great game for groups is that it is slow paced enough for participants to be able to hold a great conversation with close friends or potential business partners. It is goes without saying that big business deals routinely get opened and closed on the golf course. I'm sure Donald Trump could attest to that.
Golf happens to also be one of the only sports where you can drink beer all day and still be competitive (at least, if you're an amateur). You can't very well drink a beer while playing football or basketball or hockey.
Golf is also perhaps the wittiest sport in the world. Consider the words of Colin Bowles. "The fundamental problem with golf is that every so often, no matter how lacking you may be in the essential virtues required of a steady player, the odds are that one day you will hit the ball straight, hard, and out of sight. This is the essential frustration of this excruciating sport. For when you've done it once, you make the fundamental error of asking yourself why you can't do this all the time. The answer to this question is simple: the first time was a fluke."
People of all ages can understand that one!
