The Curtis Cup Golf Tournament
The Curtis Cup is the team trophy awarded to amateur female golfers on a biennial basis. It is often referred to as the Curtis Club Match and is jointly organized by the Ladies Golf Union and the United States Golf Association. Very similar in its makeup to the Ryder Cup, the Curtis Cup Match pits team members from the United States against those from Great Britain and Ireland. No other European countries to date are allowed to compete in the Curtis Cup Match except for Great Britain and Ireland.
The very first Curtis Cup Match took place at the Wentworth Club in England in the year 1932 and the winner that year was the team from the United States. The trophy given to the winner of the Curtis Cup is a silver bowl of a design of Paul Revere. It was originally donated to the match by the winner of the United States Women's Amateur Golf Championship in 1906 by the name of Harriot Curtis as well as Harriot's sister Margaret Curtis who won the amateur golf championship in the years 1907, 1911 and 1912.
The Curtis sisters donated the trophy in 1927 but it was not until the year 1931 rolled around that the LGU and the USGA agreed that they would both sponsor the amateur golf match. At that time the hope was that the French Golf Union would become a part of the match but that never came to pass.
The Curtis Cup takes place every two years and always in years that are numbered evenly. It also takes place alternatively on one side of the Atlantic Ocean one year and two years later on the other side of the ocean.
The youngest player to ever win the Curtis Cup was fourteen-year-old Michelle Wie who played for the American team in 2004 at Formby Golf Club in Merseyside, England and won not one but both of the single matches she played. The American team won again In 2006, played at the Pacific Dunes Golf course in Brandon, Oregon in the United States.
The 2008 Curtis Cup will be held May 31st to June 1st at The Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Will the American team extend its margin to 26-6-3 or will the Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) team start its own winning streak?
